After a hot white dwarf ceases its nuclear burning, its helium may briefly and explosively reignite. This causes the star to evolve back into a cool giant, whereupon it experiences renewed mass ejection before reheating. A reignition event of this kind was observed in 1996 in V4334 Sgr (Sakurai's object). Its temperature decrease was 100 times the predicted rate. To understand its unexpectedly fast evolution, we have developed a model in which convective mixing is strongly suppressed under the influence of flash burning. The model predicts equally rapid reheating of the star. Radio emission from freshly ionized matter now shows that this reheating has begun. Such events may be an important source of carbon and carbonaceous dust in the Galaxy. 相似文献

Motile porcine sperms adhere to hydrophilic materials such as glass and plastics. The adsorption of sperms to a hydrophobic poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) membrane is less compared with that to glass. We investigated the linear velocity (LV) and amplitude of lateral head displacement (ALHD) of motile porcine sperm on glass and PDMS preparations using computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA). Significant decreases were observed in the 15-min LV (P<0.05) and ALHD (P<0.05) in motile porcine sperm on glass preparations compared with those on PDMS preparations. These differences were due to adsorption of the head and/or neck to hydrophilic substrates. Because of the elasticity of PDMS, we propose that a PDMS membrane should be used for CASA. To investigate the dynamics of motile porcine sperms with microfluidics, we do not recommend plasma treatment to bond PDMS and glass in the microchannel preparation; instead, we suggest that a PDMS molding process without plasma treatment be used for preparation of microfluidic channels. 相似文献

To characterize the biological and biochemical properties of H-type bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), a transmission study with a Canadian H-type isolate was performed with bovinized transgenic mice (TgBoPrP), which were inoculated intracerebrally with brain homogenate from cattle with H-type BSE. All mice exhibited characteristic neurologic signs, and the subsequent passage showed a shortened incubation period. The distribution of disease-associated prion protein (PrP(Sc)) was determined by immunohistochemistry, Western blot, and paraffin-embedded tissue (PET) blot. Biochemical properties and higher molecular weight of the glycoform pattern were well conserved within mice. Immunolabeled granular PrP(Sc), aggregates, and/or plaque-like deposits were mainly detected in the following brain locations: septal nuclei, subcallosal regions, hypothalamus, paraventricular nucleus of the thalamus, interstitial nucleus of the stria terminalis, and the reticular formation of the midbrain. Weak reactivity was detected by immunohistochemistry and PET blot in the cerebral cortex, most thalamic nuclei, the hippocampus, medulla oblongata, and cerebellum. These findings indicate that the H-type BSE prion has biological and biochemical properties distinct from those of C-type and L-type BSE in TgBoPrP mice, which suggests that TgBoPrP mice constitute a useful animal model to distinguish isolates from BSE-infected cattle. 相似文献

The objective of this research was to clarify the aging-related changes in in
vitro-matured bovine oocytes. Firstly, we examined the fertilization and
embryonic development of bovine oocytes after 22 and 30–34 h of in vitro
maturation (IVM). The oocytes after 30–34 h of IVM (penetrated by sperm at around 40 h
after starting IVM) showed a lower developmental rate to blastocysts (P<0.01), although
normal fertilization rates were similar regardless of IVM duration. In the next
experiment, reactive oxygen species (ROS), mitochondrial activity and ATP content in
oocytes after 20, 30 and 40 h of IVM were examined. The lowest level of ROS was found in
the group subjected to 30 h of IVM. The mitochondrial activity and ATP content in the
group subjected to 40 h of IVM were higher than in the group subjected to 20 h of IVM
(P<0.01), and those in the group subjected to 30 h of IVM showed intermediate values.
Thereafter, the mitochondrial activities at 3 days after in vitro
fertilization in embryos derived from the oocytes subjected to 22 and 34 h of IVM were
evaluated. In the group subjected to 34 h of IVM, high-polarized mitochondria were
frequently observed at the periphery of blastomeres. The present results suggest that high
mitochondrial activity observed in oocytes after prolonged IVM culture and localization of
high-polarized mitochondria at the periphery of blastomeres during early embryonic
development may be associated with the low developmental competence in aged bovine

ABSTRACT: The present study aimed to investigate a suitable anesthesia protocol for nutritional studies, fasting tolerance, and nutrient requirements for maintenance in juvenile northern bluefin tuna Thunnus orientalis weighing 0.8–0.9 g. The fish grew in a mass seedling production under completely controlled aquaculture. The solution of 0.2 mL 2-phenoxyethanol/L prepared by filtered seawater has been notably estimated as a anesthesia protocol for the juvenile, due to a shorter mean time necessary for anesthesia and recovery and higher survival rate at 24 h after recovery. All other anesthetics, 0.1 and 0.3 mL 2-phenoxyethanol/L, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2 mL 4-allyl-2-methoxyphenol/L, and cool water temperature shocks at 16.8, 12.6 and 10.4°C, were inferior. In a 5-day tolerance test, the juvenile was fed sand lance Ammodytes personatus through the rearing period or fasted for 2, 3, 4 and 5 consecutive days. Survival rates were about 80 or 60, 50, 10 and 0%, respectively. From the relationships between days fasting and energetic and nutritional retentions, juvenile tuna require about 142.7 kJ, 5.46 g protein and 0.44 g fat/kg body weight a day for maintenance, indicating remarkably higher requirements than other aquaculture fish. 相似文献

Canine calicivirus (CaCV) No. 48 strain isolated from a dog with fatal diarrhea is known to be able to replicate in MDCK and primary dog kidney cells. In this study, two new canine cell lines, MCM-B2 and MCA-B1, were determined to be permissive for CaCV No. 48, whereas other cell lines, including one canine cell line, A-72, were non-permissive. Flow cytometric analysis indicated that CaCV No. 48 binds efficiently to the permissive cells and to some degree also to Vero cells that are non-permissive for the virus, but does not bind to the other non-permissive cells tested. Both the permissive and non-permissive cells could be transfected with genomic RNA from CaCV No. 48, resulting in the appearance of CPE, production of capsid antigen and release of infectious progeny. These results suggested that the early interaction of the virus with cells, probably by binding to a virus receptor on the cell membrane, is the major determinant of CaCV No. 48 cell tropism in vitro. 相似文献

An analysis was performed on the climatic responses of the radial growth of Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr. on contrasting north-facing and south-facing slopes in Tura, central Siberia. We developed chronologies of
tree-ring width for four plots, designated as north-upper, northlower, south-upper, and south-lower. Both residual and standard
chronologies of tree-ring widths exhibited a significant positive correlation with temperature from the end of May until early
June in all four plots. The chronologies of ring width did not reveal any major difference in the response to temperature
among the four plots. The standard chronologies of ring widths on the north-facing slope were negatively correlated with precipitation
during the winter (October–April) and in early and mid-May, whereas the residual chronologies did not reveal clear relationships
with precipitation during the winter and May. The significant correlation between ring width and temperature from the end
of May until early June indicates that temperatures in springtime play a significant role in the radial growth of L. gmelinii. The negative correlations between standard chronologies of tree-ring width and precipitation in the winter and in May on
the north-facing slope indicate that lowfrequency fluctuations in snowfall have negative effects on the radial growth. However,
these effects vary and depend on the microscale topography.
